Nesting of Canaries

The nesting season usually begins in the spring. The eye ring of the male becomes at that time redder and thicker. During the breeding season, the male will begin to coo and to wheel around the female. The latter can also answer him cooing, but his cry is much smaller than the male. The pecked is also a sign of pre-mating.

Two or even three broods can be achieved. It is not advisable to do more, to avoid tiring the couple, especially the female. This corresponds to each hatch one or two eggs of a cream color. The incubation period lasts from 12 to 14 days, the eggs are incubated by both parents. At birth, the chicks present a fine down. They are fed by both parents of a special milk they produce from their crop. After a few days, the first feathers appear. To the 5-6th day, the chicks can be banded with a ring diameter of 3.5 mm. Fifteen days after birth, the chicks are ready to leave the nest, often remaining on the ground before going to begin to perch a few days after leaving the nest. They are still fed by parents, especially by the father until the age of 40 days.
